The Syrian Feminist Lobby expresses its solidarity with feminist activist Ms. Sawsan Zakzak and condemns the campaigns of character assassination targeting activists because of their opinions and their participation in peaceful sit-ins, a right guaranteed under the International Bill of Human Rights.
The latest such campaign has targeted one of the pioneers of the feminist and human rights struggle in Syria, Ms. Sawsan Zakzak, because of her participation in the Law and Dignity sit-in in Damascus.
The campaign has included serious smear and incitement efforts aimed at tarnishing her long history of feminist and human rights activism.
The hate speech and incitement that are increasing day by day are the result of a failure to hold those responsible accountable, a situation that may lead to grave and undesirable consequences.
These practices constitute violations that must cease, especially when they target human rights defenders.
Sawsan Zakzak has worked for decades to promote human rights and feminist awareness in Syria and is considered one of the leading pioneers of the feminist movement in the country.
We condemn this incitement against her and hold the authorities responsible for her safety, as well as for ensuring accountability for those who incite against her and target her.
