The Syrian Feminist Lobby strongly condemns the ongoing grave violations of human rights in Syria, particularly those targeting women. Over the past months, the country has witnessed horrific massacres in the Syrian coast and in Sweida, resulting in the killing of thousands of civilians, including women and children, amid official silence and a failure to hold perpetrators accountable.
In this context, the Lobby highlights the gravity of the sexual violations documented by United Nations reports during the recent Sweida massacres, where at least three women were subjected to sexual assaults before being executed, according to a statement by experts at the Human Rights Council. The report also noted the abduction of more than one hundred Druze women who remain missing, at the hands of pro-government factions or groups affiliated with the authorities, as part of the horrific events that swept Sweida recently. At the same time, dozens of Alawite women remain abducted for months, with their fate completely concealed, despite the fact that the same expert committee has clearly documented these cases.
These violations, which target women in different parts of Syria, constitute serious crimes amounting to grave breaches of international humanitarian law, and underscore the urgent need for international intervention to put an end to the prevailing culture of impunity.
The Syrian Feminist Lobby firmly rejects all violations committed against civilians, particularly women, in various areas of conflict in Syria, and stresses the necessity of holding all perpetrators accountable without exception. It calls on the United Nations and international human rights organizations to open transparent and independent investigations to reveal the facts and clearly determine responsibilities.
The Lobby further reiterates its demands to:
Immediately release all abducted women without delay.
Provide psychological, legal, and medical support to survivors and those released without hesitation.
End irresponsible media coverage of cases concerning abducted women and survivors, which exposes them to additional pressures instead of ensuring a safe environment for them.
Activate international mechanisms to guarantee the protection of women and girls and prevent the recurrence of such crimes in the future.
The Lobby affirms that ensuring justice for the victims and supporting survivors constitutes a fundamental step toward achieving justice and building a fair and sustainable peace in Syria.
